A male tiger was found dead near a private land close to Nagarahole National Park in Kodagu district on Wednesday.
The
cause of death is yet to be ascertained as the autopsy has been
scheduled for Thursday. The carcass was found in Ponnampet forest
division, about 2-3 km from the boundary of the national park, said
Conservator of Forests S. Manikandan, who is also the park director.
Nagarahole,
along with Bandipur, has been identified as among the best tiger
landscapes in the country. The two national parks, which harbour 180 to
200 tigers between them, are contiguous with Wayanad in Kerala and
Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu.
According to the National Tiger Conservation
Authority report in 2014, this landscape alone accounts for 570 tigers,
making it the world’s single largest tiger landscape. But the numbers
are from the protected areas alone. There is no database or baseline
data as enumeration of tigers living outside the protected area has not
been taken up.
The number of tiger mortalities reported by NTCA for 2016 (updated till August 2) is 61, including eight from Karnataka.
