A low intensity explosion rocked the city court complex,
shattering window panes and the asbestos roof of the public toilet
around 4 p.m. on Monday. Following the explosion, court proceedings were
suspended and the premises cleared, as a safety measure.
Fortunately,
the toilet was empty and no major injuries or casualties were reported.
However, two persons walking in the vicinity suffered bruises.
Members
of the bomb detection and disposal squad, experts from the Forensic
Science Laboratory, and sniffer dogs were pressed into service and the
area was secured for investigation.

Minister G. Parameshwara visited the spot and told reporters it was
“premature” to arrive at any conclusion and police officers probing the
matter said they were investigating all possibilities.
Sources said
fragments found at the spot seemed to be remains of a pressure cooker
and a battery and hence the possibility of an improved explosive device
(IED) could not be ruled out.
Dr. Parameshwara said that samples had
been collected and only investigations would reveal the nature of the
blast, the materials used or whether it was the similar to those used in
other incidents of this nature.
“It is for the
investigating team to determine and anything further at this juncture
would be in the realm of speculation,” Dr. Parameshwara added.
